At Tristate Karate, now located in Cresaptown at the Wesleyan Church gymnasium, we offer a combined study of both Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do.  Our curriculum includes extensive study of forms, technical kicks, fighting combinations, sparring skills and self defense techniques with a strong emphasis on discipline, respect and academic achievement.

    This curriculum helps one to achieve excellent physical fitness, self confidence, respect for others and a strong work ethic as well as the unsurpassed ability to defend oneself and his or her loved ones.  At the A.M.A.A. we take the safety of our students very seriously.  We take every precaution to provide a safe and healthy learning environment while teaching the skills necessary for our students to protect themselves throughout their lives outside the dojang.

Tristate Karate Curriculum Technical Requirements

Note to students:  In addition to all technical requirements listed below, a consistently high level of participation, performance and respect for both your instructors and your classmates is required during ALL classes in order to be eligible for promotion.  This means your attention should be on your instructor at ALL times during discussion.  You should be in a proper stance (Shio, Charyot or Joonbi) at ALL times.  And you should maintain a high degree of individual focus during performance of your techniques.  Daily observation of these requirements in addition to performance of all technical requirements will determine a student's eligibility to graduate to his or her next belt level.

Minimum time and class attendance required for advancement.  White thru Blue Advanced 3-4 months with 28 classes minimum to be eligible for pretest for each belt.  Red / Red Advanced 3-6 months.  Brown / Brown Advanced belt 6 months with 56 class minimum each level to be eligible for pretest.  Final promotion is contingent on passing of pretest.

 

           Prebelt / Probational:     10th Geup

            Term: 3 months

            Must learn basic etiquette and proper dojang protocol.

            Must have a minimum of 21 classes by final exam.

            Must be able to perform white belt basics to a Korean  6 count.

            White Belt Basics are performed as listed under the white belt curriculum and done facing left then facing right.

White Belt: __9th Geup                                                          

Term: 3 months minimum

Technical kick:

4 count Side Kick

Combinations: White Belt Basics

1.  Front punch; offensive front punch

2.  Reverse punch; offensive reverse punch

3.  Front kick; offensive front kick

4.  Back leg front kick; offensive back leg front kick

6.  Back leg side kick; offensive back leg side kick

Form:  Kicho Il Bu - Tang Soo Do  (Tae Kwon Do - Chun Ji)

Self Defense:  3 Choke Holds

Physical Endurance required:  10 push-ups, 20 crunches, 50 jumping jacks

Yellow Belt:_______8th Geup                                                           

Term: 3 months minimum

Technical kick:

3 count Round House Kick

Combinations

1.  Offensive Front Punch; Back Punch; Front Ridge Hand.

2.  Offensive Front Punch; Front Leg Front Kick; Back Punch.

3.  Offensive Front Punch; Front Leg Side Kick; Back Punch.

Form:  Kicho Ee Bu - Tang Soo Do  (Tae Kwon Do - Tan Gun)

Self Defense:  3 Choke Holds, Lapel Grab

Physical Endurance required:   15 push ups, 25 crunches, 50 jumping jacks

Sparring:   1- 30 second round

Orange Belt:______7th Geup                                                            

Term: 3 months minimum

Technical kick: 5 count Reverse Side (Pivot) Kick

Self Defense:  3 Choke Holds, Lapel Grab, Bear Hug

Physical Endurance required:   15 push ups, 30 crunches, 50 jumping jacks

Sparring:  2 - 30 second rounds with 30 second rest

Green Belt:_______6th Geup                                                              

Term: 3 months minimum

Technical kick: 6 count Round / Side Kick

Combinations:

Physical Endurance required:   20 push ups, 30 crunches, 100 jumping jacks

Sparring:  1 minute round

Purple Belt:______5th Geup                                                                 

Term: 3 months minimum

Technical kick: 3 count Hook Kick

Combinations: 

1.  Offensive front punch, step through back punch, reverse side kick, back punch

2.  Offensive front leg hook kick, back leg round house kick, reverse side kick, back punch

3.  Offensive front leg round kick, reverse side kick, back leg round house kick, back ridge hand

Form:  Pyung Ahn Ee Dan - Tang Soo Do  (Tae Kwon Do - Yul Guk)

Self Defense:  All previous techniques, hands front, hands rear, wrist grab (cross and same side)

Physical Endurance required:   20 push ups, 30 crunches, 100 jumping jacks

Sparring:  2 - 1 minute rounds with 30 second rest

Blue Belt:________4th Geup                                                                    

Term: 3 months minimum

Technical kick: 6 count Double Round / Double Side Kick

Combinations: 

1.  Offensive reverse hook kick, back leg round kick, back punch

2.  Offensive front leg hook kick, back leg front kick, reverse hook kick, back punch

3.  Offensive back leg round kick, tornado kick, reverse hook kick, back ridge hand

Form:  Pyung Ahn Sam Dan - Tang Soo Do  (Tae Kwon Do - Chung Gwyn)

Self Defense:  All previous techniques, hair pull front and rear

Physical Endurance required:   25 push ups, 35 crunches, 100 jumping jacks

Sparring:  2 minute round

Advanced Blue Belt:=============== ===========

Technical kick: 6 count Double Round / Double Side Kick

Combinations:  Blue Belt Combinations perfectly

Forms:  Dan Gun (Toi-Gye) - Tae Kwon Do 

Self Defense:  mastery of previous techniques

Physical Endurance required:   25 push ups, 35 crunches, 100 jumping jacks

Sparring:  2 minute round

Red Belt:_____3rd Geup                                                                           

Term: 3 months minimum

Technical kick: 9 count Front / Round / Side / Hook Kick

Combinations: 

1.  Offensive reverse crescent kick, back punch, back leg round house kick, back punch

2.  Offensive front leg side kick, jump front leg side kick, back punch

3.  Offensive jump back leg round house kick, reverse hook, back ridge hand

Form:  Pyung Ahn Sa Dan - Tang Soo Do  (Tae Kwon Do - Toi Gye)

Self Defense:  All previous techniques, rear choke at arm's length, head lock

Physical Endurance required:   25 push ups, 40 crunches, 100 jumping jacks

Sparring:  2- 2 minute rounds with 1 minute rest

Advanced Red Belt:============================

Term: 3 months minimum

Technical kick:  Jump Front kick and Jump Side Kick

Combinations:  Red Belt Combinations perfectly

Forms:   Do San (Hwa Rang) - Tae Kwon Do

Self Defense:  Mastery of all previous techniques

Physical Endurance required:   25 push ups, 40 crunches, 100 jumping jacks

Sparring:  2- 2 minute rounds with 1 minute rest

Brown Belt:______2nd Geup                                                                         

Term: 6 months minimum

Technical kick:  9 count double front / double round / double side / hook - round

Combinations: 

1.  Offensive front punch, step through back punch, spinning back fist, skip in front leg round house kick, back palm strike

2.  Offensive front back fist, back punch, axe kick, step through elbow strike, back knife hand strike

3.  Offensive front chop strike, step through back knife hand strike, reverse hook kick, kneeling back vertical punch

Form:  Pyung Ahn Oh Dan - Tang Soo Do

Self Defense:  All previous techniques, 3 - knife attacks (straight stab, downward & cross strike), 4 - gun threats (front & back of head, front and rear of chest), stick strike, defense from punch, defense from side kick.

Physical Endurance required:   35 push ups, 50 crunches, 100 jumping jacks

Sparring:  3 - 2 minute rounds with 1 minute rests

Advanced Brown Belt: 1st Geup======================

Term: 6 months minimum

Technical kick: mastery of all previous technical kicks

Combinations:  mastery of all previous combinations

Forms:  Won Hyo (Chung Mu) - Tae Kwon Do

Self Defense:  Mastery of all previous technuiques

Physical Endurance required:   35 push ups, 50 crunches, 100 jumping jacks

Sparring:  5 consecutive 2 minute rounds with 1 minute rests between

Black Belt 1st Dan:                                                          l

Technical kick:  All previous kick and level one's.

1.  360 degree reverse hook kick, back leg round house kick, reverse hook kick, back punch

Bassie Dae & Nai Han Chi Cho Dan - Tang Soo Do

Kwan Gye & Po Eun -Tae Kwon Do  (NOTE: Yul Guk, Chung Gun, Toi Gye, Hwa Rang & Chung Mu must be tested on to complete 1st Dan in TKD prior)

NOTE:  Our primary discipline at TKA is Tang Soo Do.  Our secondary is Tae Kwon Do.   All Tang Soo Do Hyung are mandatory.   Those Tae Kwon Do Tul that are listed in parenthesis are for reference as to where each TKD form would fall in regular progression.  All Tae Kwon Do Tul listed are mandatory for those also seeking rank in Tae Kwon Do.  It is recommended that one first achieve their Cho Dan in Tang Soo Do then learn the balance of Tae Kwon Do Tul that have not previously been learned to achieve TKD rank in the interim between TSD Dan exams.

 

We encourage our students to research and enlighten themselves to the origins, history and meanings of not only our Tang Soo or TaeKwon specific forms and techniques but to the precursors from which much of these styles were derived.  FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO DO HISTORY AND ORIGIN RESEARCH FOR BUNKAI / APPLICATIONS, TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUE, ETC.:
